?FAMILY HISTORY

We hear a lot about 'family history,' especially with FH.
What is meant by strong family history of heart disease?
It means having any member of your family diagnosed with heart disease.  It also depends on cholesterol levels.  For example, a cholesterol level of over 400 will definitely suggest a strong family history of heart disease.

What age should you have your child tested for high cholesterol and what is the name for the test?
I recommend children get tested for FH after 6-8 years old.  Before a child gets tested for FH I emphasize to the parents to make sure their child knows that they will be getting a blood sample drawn.

Even better, the next time your child plans to have blood drawn at the pediatrician's office for other reasons, ask the pediatrician to also get blood for a 'Lipid Profile' test.  It includes cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL levels.

What is the average cost of the blood test?
The average cost is between $30 and $40.

Does insurance cover these blood tests?
Yes. You are screening your child for a genetic disorder. It is an appropriate diagnostic test and should be covered under insurance.
